SportVerse

Overview
After graduating from London, I co-founded SportVerse alongside my friends Jira Chawalitakul (software engineer) and Chet Vongsuraphichet (finance and marketing). Our vision was to merge the booming NFT market with the $500 billion sports industry by creating athlete-based NFTs. At the time, there were few sports-related NFT projects, so we saw an opportunity to combine fantasy football with blockchain technology, offering users both entertainment and financial stakes in athletes' real-world performances.

Problem
Problem Statement: Sports NFT projects face numerous challenges. First, many users are unfamiliar with blockchain technology, making the process of buying and trading NFTs intimidating. Additionally, the volatility of the cryptocurrency market deters some investors, while older sports fans might struggle to see the value in NFTs compared to traditional memorabilia. Sustainability is another concern, as NFTs have an environmental impact that can hurt a project's image. Without additional utility, such as exclusive content or real-world events, NFTs can quickly lose their long-term appeal.
Key Metrics for Success
Community Growth: Measured by engagement levels and the number of active users.
User Trust: Tracked through user feedback, with a focus on transparency and ease of use.
Sustainability: Evaluated through the adoption of energy-efficient blockchain technologies and carbon offsetting strategies.
NFT Sales: Assessed by the volume of NFTs minted and traded on the platform.
Solution
To address the challenges facing sports NFTs, SportVerse adopted the following strategies:
Engagement through Gamification: A crypto-based betting game was launched, where users could win cryptocurrency rewards by betting on real-world athlete performances. Additionally, a meme competition boosted community engagement, with submissions showcased in a virtual gallery.
Simplified User Experience: The platform allowed users to mint and trade NFTs with ease, integrating traditional payment options alongside crypto to lower the barrier for non-crypto users.
Managing Volatility: Acceptance of stable cryptocurrencies and traditional currencies provided financial stability, mitigating the risks posed by volatile crypto markets.
Hybrid Products: Physical items linked to NFTs were offered, combining the appeal of traditional memorabilia with the innovation of blockchain.
Sustainability Measures: Adoption of energy-efficient blockchains and carbon-offset strategies helped reduce environmental impact, addressing sustainability concerns.
Outcomes Achieved
Community Growth: SportVerse attracted over 4,000 active users, creating a vibrant and engaged community.
Increased NFT Sales: By simplifying the buying process and integrating hybrid products, a large number of NFTs were successfully minted and sold.
Sustainable Practices: Commitment to using energy-efficient blockchains and carbon-offset initiatives improved the project’s image, attracting environmentally-conscious users.
User Engagement: The crypto-betting game and meme competitions significantly boosted community interaction and overall interest in the platform.
UX Research
Research identified a significant overlap between sports fans and crypto investors, with nearly 47% of crypto enthusiasts also showing a keen interest in sports. This insight formed the basis of SportVerse's strategy, which aimed to engage these two groups by linking the value of NFTs to real-world athlete performance.
Key UX findings and strategies:
Simplified Minting Process: By designing a straightforward and mobile-friendly platform, it became easier for users, even those unfamiliar with crypto, to buy and manage NFTs.
Customisable Features: Inspired by fantasy sports, features like real-time performance updates, team customisation, leaderboards, and social interaction tools were introduced to engage users.
Educational Resources: Recognising the barrier of unfamiliarity with blockchain, tutorials and guides on NFTs and crypto were provided to empower users to feel confident in their investments.
Security and Support: Robust security measures and readily available customer support were critical in building user trust.
Design
To give SportVerse a distinct identity, pixel art was selected as the artistic direction, drawing inspiration from the success of projects like CryptoPunks. The challenge was ensuring these pixelated athletes remained unique and recognisable, particularly across the development of over 800 unique avatars.
Key Design Features:
User Experience (UX): Emphasis was placed on an intuitive and seamless user experience, simplifying navigation and the minting process for both first-time users and veterans.
Security: Integration of secure cryptocurrency wallets and a robust backend ensured user data and transactions were protected.
Visual Identity: Each athlete's NFT was meticulously designed with distinct attributes, allowing users to easily distinguish between rarity levels, such as GOAT, Icon, MVP, and Talent.

Development
The development phase involved close coordination between the backend, frontend, and blockchain components to ensure seamless interaction across the platform.
Here’s how the technical build was approached:
Blockchain Integration: Ethereum was implemented for transactions, with smart contracts developed to manage player valuations. Each player's performance was tied to real-world data, determining their value and rarity.
Frontend Development: The user interface was designed for ease of use, allowing users to buy, sell, and manage their NFT portfolios with minimal friction. A mobile-friendly design was prioritised to cater to a growing mobile-first audience.
Backend Systems: The backend handled player performance data, transaction management, and rarity assignment, ensuring the platform remained fast and scalable.
Security: A robust security infrastructure was established to safeguard user transactions and data.
Comprehensive Testing: Extensive testing was conducted before launch to ensure smooth functionality across all components and to address any security vulnerabilities.
